The micro-store concepts is really catching on – and its practitioners are experiencing considerable success. This is a wonderful situation, given the present state of the retail market and industry nationally.
Kylie Hansen, who opened her floristry Beyond Blooms in the Colthup Boutique Arcade on 4 July, has already doubled the size of her space.
Beyond Blooms’ success certainly reflects Kylie’s artistry and skills in this very special trade. However in a world where designs, styles, and presentations are often generic and predictable, Kylie takes an individual and stylised approach. “I have people come in who have seen the pictures on Facebook, because they want something different.”
Kylie definitely puts her own touch on her arrangements, so expect to see the unexpected, such as The Flower of The Week. For example, who would have thought that purple or green Kale, a form of cabbage, would walk out the door when presented as a one-off decoration? “It has been one of our most popular arrangements,” Kylie said.
On the counter is a funky potted arrangement that features bright green clumps of foliage that could be mistaken for tufts of grass. “This is Green Trick! It’s been really popular. They’re actually members of the Carnation family.”
Affordability is a major factor in Kylie’s business plan. As a former stay-at-home mum with two daughters who are now at school, she wants others to be able to buy a lovely floral arrangement “… without going, ‘Mmmm, the kids need new school shoes’ … to be able to have something pretty for themselves and not feel guilty.”
Beyond Blooms’ originality and affordability have captured the imagination of many in a very short time. With Kylie’s enthusiasm and dedication to being different, we can anticipate many more delightful surprises to come.
